An A~Z of Pub Signs and their Origins

An A~Z of Pub Signs and their Origins

£1.20 – £2Price range: £1.20 through £2

In the 1400s, publicans were required by law to display painted signs. Because the land on which pubs were built was owned by the church or the nobility, early signs were either biblical or depicted coats of arms. However, as we have become literate, many picture signs have given way to the pub name only.

Describing over 200 pub signs. Divided into two sections: “Pub signs used nationwide” and “pub signs relative to Bristol”.
