Tithe Apportionment Index
The Bristol Archives holds the Tithe Maps and Apportionment books for many parishes within the Bristol Diocese. These records, which cover mainly the country parishes, can be of great value to family historians. They may help to locate an ancestor’s home, show the amount of property they owned or rented and, as most are dated between 1840 and 1850, perhaps aid in finding them in the censuses for 1841 and/or 1851.
The main difficulty is first finding the parish your ancestor was in and then finding them in the apportionment book. To assist with this we indexed the owners and occupiers in the apportionment books for all the local parishes around Bristol.
The parishes included are:-
Abbots Leigh, Almondsbury, Alveston, Bedminster, Bitton, Brislington, Bristol SS Philip & Jacob, Clifton, Cold Ashton, Compton Greenfield, Dodington, Doynton, Dyrham & Hinton, Elberton, Filton, Frampton Cotterell, Frenchay, Hanham, Henbury, Horfield, Iron Acton, Mangotsfield, Marshfield, Oldland, Olveston, Pucklechurch, Shirehampton, Siston, St George, Stapleton, Stoke Gifford, Tormarton, Wapley & Codrington, West Littleton, Westbury on Trym, Westerleigh, Whitchurch, Wick & Abson, Winterbourne, Yate.
