Do you live in Shirehampton, Avonmouth or King’s Weston? This book is made up of four chapters loosely stitched together out of four booklets about the names of places in north-west Bristol and their history. The information has been accessible via the Shire newspaper or Kings Weston Action Group websites but has been brought together into print for the first time. The bulk of the book is about the names of places in the broadest sense, their relation to local history, culture and geography and their value as historical evidence, focused mainly on Shirehampton in its state as an independent parish since 1744, including the interloper Avonmouth, and acknowledging the position of both with the domains of the great house at King’s Weston. It is meant to be something for everyone’s interest not just an academic work and refers to a number of other publications for further reading.
