Hotwells – Spa to Pantomime

£10.00

Hotwells – Spa to Pantomime by local author Sue Stops is a wonderfully illustrated and colourful tale about the community of Hotwells and Cliftonwood and its ability to adapt to extraordinary changes. The book recounts some early Hotwells history, from its heyday as a Spa to the 20 year period when Hope Chapel, built in the 1780’s, became the Hope Centre. We read how residents and “newcomers” alike rebuilt community spirits after the destruction to livelihoods, homes and historic buildings caused by the Cumberland Basin Bridges scheme in the 1960’s.  Hope Centre became a beacon for Community Arts and the 40-year old pantomime is still a great Bristol Tradition. The book reproduces images and stories from past pantomimes all created, written, designed, produced and performed by the local community.
