Before the National Burials Index Project was launched, the Society, or individual members of it, had started to produce such Burial Indexes for our area. The first of these resulted in a CD ‘They Lived in Bristol’ containing an index to burials registered in all the Bristol Anglican Parishes, in many parishes outside Bristol, and even in a significant number of Non-Conformist Chapels. This covered 1813–1837.
The Society followed with a further CD of Bristol Diocese Burial Registers for the period 1754-1812 with transcripts and indexes.
The National Burial Index Project, organised by the Federation of Family History Societies following a proposal by the British Genealogical Record Users’ Committee in 1994, has also made a considerable contribution to this area. In response to this National Project, the Sodbury Vale Group of the Society undertook the transcription, checking and indexing of a tranche of parishes across the north of the ‘County of Avon as listed below (in alphabetical order). This South Gloucestershire Burials Index is now available free on this website.
