The 1851 census was taken on the night of Sunday 30th March 1851.
It is the earliest really useful UK census. Compared with the 1841 census, it includes the following information:
- Precise age
- Relationship between residents at the same address
- Birthplace
The columns are as follows:
- Number of householder’s schedule
- Name of street, place or road and name or number of house
- Name and surname of each person who abode in the house on the night of 30th March 1851.
- Relation to head of family
- Condition (i.e. married, widowed, single, etc)
- Age of males/females
- Rank, profession or occupation
- Where born
- Whether blind or deaf-and-dumb
This was the first census to be indexed by volunteers, many working for family history societies. The society has an 1851 census index available on microfiche at the Research Room.
